Holiday Reading |
12.15.03 |
Yes, folks, believe it or not, the
holidays are upon us! If you're like me, you've probably
left everything until the last minute and the month of
December is nothing but a mad craze to shop, ship, and
celebrate. The good news is, all of this madness makes
me want to bury my nose in a good book. For whatever
reason, I don't really like "seasonal" books--that is,
I'm not a big fan of reading about Christmas during December.
I suppose it's because I'm reading to escape, not to
be reminded that I should be stringing popcorn and cranberries
or making my own holly wreaths (tough to do now that
I'm in Florida--there's not a lot of holly around these
parts) instead of relaxing with a good book! So, here
are some of my favorite "holiday" reads. But, be warned,
these are not books about Santa and his elves!

Traditional Thanksgiving Meal |
11.10.03 |
I don’t like to toot my own
horn, but I have to admit that I am a great cook. My
husband and I love to host dinner parties, and one of
our favorite things to do is to invite 30 or 40 of our
closest friends over for a big bash. We do everything
ourselves—from planning the menu to doing all the
cooking to (my least favorite task!) cleaning up afterwards.
To me, having guests over is the best excuse to experiment
with new recipes. That is, with one notable exception:
Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the one meal where I stick
with the tried and true. Here’s what’s going
to be on my table this Thanksgiving:
Turkey with sausage stuffing
Gravy (and lots of it!)
Mashed potatoes
Baked yams with mini-marshmallows on top
Creamed peas with pearl onions
Spinach salad with bacon, goat cheese, and pine nuts
Rolls
Deviled Eggs
Sweet pickles, dill pickles, black and green olives
Pumpkin pie with whipped cream
Apple pie with crumb topping and vanilla ice cream
I feel especially fortunate to be able
to prepare meals for my family and friends during the
holiday season. It wasn’t always so. I remember
being twenty years old and away from home for my first
Thanksgiving and looking into my cupboard and seeing
nothing but cheap packages of Top Ramen, which was
all I could afford at the time. Just when I had resigned
myself to a meal of chicken-flavored noodles, a miracle
arrived at my doorstep in the form of a box of groceries
donated by a local charity. In the box was a gift certificate
for a turkey, along with five pounds of potatoes, some
canned corn, a frozen apple pie, and a bag of stuffing
mix. As difficult as it was to be so far from home
that day, my heart was cheered by the generosity of
strangers who donated their time and money to brighten
my day. It was one Thanksgiving I will never forget.

In
order to get inside the head of aspiring country music
star Bradley Nelson in DREAM
ON, I spent quite a bit of time listening to (ok,
and looking at!) some of country music’s top male
vocalists. Believe me, it was no hardship! Some of my
favorites, including album titles, are:

CD
I’ve Bought Lately |
7.11.03 |
Faith Hill’s “Cry” is
one of the best CD’s I’ve bought in
a long time. I love the passion she puts into the
songs she sings, and it’s easy to see why
she’s a star.

I’ve Tried Out On Friends In A While |
7.11.03 |
With my recent move from Seattle
to Florida, I’ve been getting used to the new
varieties of fish here on the East coast. While Halibut
is still #1 in my book, Grouper is running a close
second! Here’s a recipe I’ve tried out
on several friends lately.
GROUPER WITH GINGER BUTTER SAUCE
For Fish:
2 pounds Grouper
4 tablespoons butter
4 cloves of garlic, minced
For Sauce:
1 cup dry white wine
1/3 cup chopped shallots
1/3 cup thinly sliced fresh ginger
1/2 cup whipping cream
4 tablespoons chilled butter, cut into small pieces
Combine wine, shallots and ginger
in heavy small saucepan over high heat. Boil until
liquid is reduced to 1/4 cup, about 5 minutes.
Add cream and boil until liquid is reduced by half,
about 3 minutes. Remove from heat.
Melt butter with garlic in microwave
and brush over Grouper. Season to taste with salt
and pepper. Place on barbeque or under broiler
and cook to desired doneness.
Bring sauce to simmer. Remove from heat and add butter, whisking
until smooth. Strain. Add salt and pepper to taste. Ladle sauce onto
four plates, top with Grouper, and serve immediately.

to Make You Want to Curl Up With a Scotsman |
6.16.03 |
Karen Marie Moning’s (www.kmoning.bizland.com/tartan)
THE DARK HIGHLANDER is a wonderfully layered, deeply
engrossing read. I enjoyed the ancient Celtic lore,
the interesting setting (Manhattan and Scotland), and
the dark, sexy hero!

Writing
Advice I Could Give You |
6.16.03 |
Don’t let yourself get blindsided
by fear—whether it be fear of rejection, fear
of what will happen when you succeed, fear that you’re
not doing it “right,” etc. This is a
business that takes a lot of courage to survive.
There’s no such thing as a perfect book, one
the will please all of the people, all of the time.
Write the characters and the stories that appeal
to you and don’t let the critics get in the
way of your success. This is the same advice I give
myself, by the way. The fear can really get you if
you let it. So, don’t let it!

Movie To Rent |
5.02.03 |
I am a huge Katharine Hepburn fan! I love almost all her old movies, but one of my all-time favorites
is THE PHILADELPHIA STORY starring The Great Kate,
Cary Grant, and Jimmy Stewart. Cary
Grant's character has the best name of all time (C.K.
Dexter Haven), and Katharine's character's sister,
Delilah, almost steals the show!

Writers
Group Around |
5.02.03 |
If you're interested in writing
romantic fiction, the best writers group--hands
down, in my opinion--is the Romance Writers of
America (www.rwanational.org). RWA puts on a fabulous conference every
year that is attended by both published and aspiring
authors, editors, agents, and other industry professionals. In
addition, they publish a monthly magazine (the Romance
Writers Report)
that focuses on craft and industry issues. But
the real beauty of RWA is the local chapters, where
you can meet others who understand what it really
means to be a writer. I
was fortunate to find great critique partners and
even better friends through the Greater Seattle
RWA (www.gsrwa.org),
and I count myself lucky to have been involved
with this wonderful group over the years.

Books
I've Read Lately |
5.02.03 |
Without a doubt, the best books I've
read lately have been the SWEET POTATO QUEENS series
by Jill Conner Browne. These books made me want to move to Mississippi,
buy fishnet stockings, and sew a great big butt and
enormous breasts into a sequined cocktail dress. You'll
see what I mean if you buy the books, which are titled: THE SWEET POTATO QUEENS' BOOK OF LOVE,
GOD SAVE THE SWEET POTATO QUEENS, and THE SWEET POTATO
QUEENS BIG-ASS COOKBOOK (AND FINANCIAL PLANNER). My
thanks to Ann Roth (REFORMING COLE, Silhouette Special
Edition, March 2003) for recommending these books to
me!

Writing
Advice I Could Give You |
5.02.03 |
Keep your butt in the chair, even
on the tough days. Writing isn't always fun,
and sometimes it's almost as bad as -- shudder --
work! Don't give up on your story just because
the writing isn't easy. Figure out what's wrong
(by talking to your writing pals, brainstorming what
your next scene should be, etc.) and fix it. Just
don't give up!

New
Movie To Rent |
5.02.03 |
I really enjoyed ABOUT A
BOY when it came out in theaters, and just
watched it the other day when it came out on
video. Although it's billed as a romance, this
is really about one man's journey to connect
with the people around him. It's not the kind of movie that will
leave you clutching your sides, but it's well
worth the $3.99 rental fee.

to Make You laugh AND Cry |
5.02.03 |
My pal Alesia Holliday (www.alesiaholliday.com)
is a Navy wife, a trial lawyer, a great mom,
and a wonderful friend. On top of that,
she's also a fabulous author! Her book,
E-MAIL TO THE FRONT will give you an up-close-and-personal
view of what it's like for all the left-behind
military spouses out there and will help you
realize the sacrifices these unsung heroes
make every day. |
